Community Living in Chudleigh

Whilst sometimes under rated, community plays a central role in our lives, always has done and most likely, always will. As Alasdair McIntyre suggests, we are dependent rational animals and thus personal and social forms of moral life facilitate our flourishing in virtue. It provides a sense of belonging, a sense of place, and can be the foundations of happy healthy living, through relationships and necessities for both simple errands and leisure time.

Nevertheless, without getting too deep, the community and surrounding areas of where you choose to live is really important and is often high on the agenda of new buyers. So, you may wonder, why choose Chudleigh? Us at Autograph are based in Chudleigh, a small town in central Devon between Newton Abbot and Exeter. Situated in the Teign Valley, and very close to the edge of Dartmoor the area provides the pleasure of country walks and the peace and quiet of a tight knit community. The Haldon forest is nearby, perfect for running and cycling, as well as the ‘Rock’ a natural beauty spot attracting rock climbers. Yet, it is also bypassed by the A38 which also means it takes no time at all, to be back in busily hub of the Exeter city centre.

Chudleigh boasts all the basic amenities at its finger tips, with outdoor swimming pool, cricket field, football pitches, allotments, a skate park, two doctors’ surgeries, a dentist and a library; as well as the local primary school. Perfect for families, and awarded ‘Good’ by Ofsted, the church of England school teaches children from reception to Year 6. The School occupies a vision of an inspiring curriculum, providing a range of experiences that encourage a lifelong love of learning, in a safe and stimulating environment. Whilst retaining a fairly traditional village centre, there are plenty of community events throughout the year, including the Chudleigh Carnival taking place in July every year. And, the village itself is rather popular in some other unusual ways, such as being spoofed by the name of ‘Chudley’ in the Harry Potter books and providing J.K. Rowling’s inspiration for Quidditch, with the Chudleigh Cannons being one of the only teams originally established back in 1674.
